about

The, ‘Straight to Tape’ Series title comes from a love of forgotten schlock horror movies of the 70s/80s, that instead of getting a cinematic release, went straight to VHS tape. Although not embodied in the music, the title of the series just came from the idea of the discovery of creative works that maybe deserved more attention at the time or that have garnered praise as years progressed. Maybe the movies were so bad they were good. It doesn't matter; they were pure joy to watch. It doesn't matter that they were detached from the main movie industry, they were out there, and thank goodness they were. It’s just a way to get different music out, that is maybe unclassifiable, and detached from the main music industry.

Moonlight Coma was previously released as an instrumental track. About a year ago, I happened to stumble upon Gross Net’s music and asked if he would record some vocals to another track I had been working on, called, ‘Fear of Water’. I sent him a fairly simple loop and he kindly obliged. Nothing came of that track, but around the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak I decided to use the vocal track, as the lyrics were pretty relevant; the heat, breathing, fear of and in the air. With some additional work, the woozy, rippling synths and the vocals; the narrative really came together.

Skein is a chugging, sluggish funk track at heart. The title came about after creating the warbling, swan-like nasal honk in the track. Huge influences when writing the track were Mutant Disco releases and some early Factory Records recordings by such artists as Biting Tongues and Quando Quango.
Towards the latter half the track things lift off with the introduction of Middle Eastern style folding synth drones, reminiscent of some of Cabaret Voltaire’s early music.
